What we’re asked for most in Swinnow
The jobs that come up again and again in Swinnow, each with a written estimate before work starts.
- Consumer unit upgradesMany Swinnow houses date from the 1940s to the 1960s. Where the board has not been replaced since, an RCD-protected unit is the most useful single upgrade.
- EICR testingIf you bought your house from the council, or are buying one now, an EICR shows what has and has not been updated since it was built.
- Full house rewiresHouses that still have wiring from the 1950s or earlier may have rubber-insulated cable, which is long past its safe life. A rewire replaces it.
- Smoke alarm and fire safetyFor maisonettes and houses alike, mains-powered linked alarms replace battery units that are easy to forget.

Electrical work in Swinnow
Until the Second World War, Swinnow’s fields were farmed for rhubarb as part of the Rhubarb Triangle. Leeds’ population was growing and it needed new council housing, so the fields were compulsorily purchased and the estate was built over them. Today Swinnow sits between Bramley to the east and Pudsey to the west, a mix of semi-detached houses, terraces and maisonettes largely dating from the 1940s to the 1960s, with an industrial estate to the south where Britvic is a major employer. Christ the Saviour Anglican Church and St Mark’s Methodist Church both serve the area.
The estate is now a mix of council tenants and owner-occupiers. Houses of that age were wired for much lower demands than today’s, and some may still have their first consumer unit. A consumer unit upgrade is the quickest safety gain. If you have just bought, an EICR will show whether the wiring itself needs attention, and any older rubber-insulated cable is a clear case for a full rewire.
