Who fits smoke alarms in Leeds?Martin Day Electricians: mains-wired, interlinked and certified

You walk away with interlinked alarms that sound together in every room, fitted to current Building Regulations and with written certification for landlords, insurers or a house sale.

The short answer

We fit mains-wired, interlinked smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms to current Building Regulations, replacing old battery-only units so one alarm sets off the rest, then certify the finished job for landlords, insurers or house sales. NICEIC Approved Contractor, with a written estimate before any work starts.

How do I know I need this?

A lot of Leeds homes still run on old battery smoke alarms that are not interlinked or mains-wired, so they may not sound in time or across every room during a fire. Landlords also risk falling short of their legal duty to fit and maintain alarms in a let property.

You notice

  • Alarms that chirp at 3am for no reason
  • Battery units that get unclipped and never refitted
  • The kitchen alarm going off every time you cook
  • Old alarms that are not linked, so one sounding does not wake the house

It's costing you

  • No certificate to show a landlord, insurer or buyer
  • Sleep lost to false alarms and dead-battery chirps
  • A let property falling short of its legal duties

And if you leave it

  • Alarms that may not sound in time, or in every room, in a fire
  • Enforcement action against a landlord who falls short
  • A failed check when you sell or re-let the property

How the job is done

The same sequence on every job, so you know what happens and when.

  1. We check what is fitted now

We check what alarms you have, where they are and where the regulations say smoke, heat and CO alarms should be.

  2. We plan the right mix of alarms

Mains-wired smoke alarms in hallways and landings, a heat alarm in the kitchen and CO alarms where a fixed combustion appliance needs one.

  3. We wire and interlink the system

Every alarm is mains-wired and interlinked, so when one sounds they all do, replacing battery-only units that sound on their own.

  4. We test, certify and hand over

The finished system is tested and certified in writing as an NICEIC Approved Contractor, useful for landlords, insurers and house sales alike.

What the service covers

We install and repair mains-wired, interlinked fire safety systems across Leeds homes, to current Building Regulations. That includes:

  • Mains-wired smoke alarms - fitted in hallways and landings, interlinked so every alarm sounds together
  • Heat alarms in kitchens - where a standard smoke alarm would trigger too often on cooking fumes
  • Carbon monoxide alarms - in rooms with a gas boiler, log burner or other fixed combustion appliance
  • Testing, fault-finding and replacement - for existing alarms that are old, unreliable or chirping at 3am for no reason
  • Certification - written confirmation the installation meets current regulations, useful for landlords, insurers and house sales alike

If you only need a standalone carbon monoxide detector and no smoke alarm work, our dedicated carbon monoxide detector installation service covers that on its own.

What do the regulations require?

The rules split into two sets, depending on whether you live in the property or let it:

  • Building Regulations - apply to new work, such as a new home, a rewire, a loft conversion or an extension, where mains-wired, interlinked alarms are required. They do not make you replace working battery alarms in a home where no new work is being done
  • Landlord duties in England - at least one smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation (it need not be mains-wired), a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance other than a gas cooker and a duty to repair or replace alarms reported as faulty during a tenancy

If you’re letting a property, this sits alongside your wider landlord electrical safety obligations, not apart from them.

A smoke alarm is the one piece of kit in the house with a single job. Getting it wired in, tested and certified means it’s actually going to do that job when it matters.
