Who wires air conditioning in Leeds?Martin Day Electricians: dedicated circuits, fitted alongside your AC engineer

You get a dedicated, RCD-protected circuit with isolators fitted where your AC engineer needs them, plus the electrical certificate they need to commission the system.

The short answer

Air conditioning needs its own dedicated circuit, RCD protection and isolator switches, not a shared socket circuit. We fit this alongside your AC engineer, usually in a single day, then issue the certificate they need to commission the system. NICEIC Approved Contractor, with a written estimate before we start.

How do I know I need this?

Running an air conditioning unit off a shared socket circuit rather than a dedicated, RCD-protected supply means the installation can't be signed off and isn't safe to switch on. Without the electrical certificate, your AC installer can't commission the system, and a future buyer's surveyor may flag the work.

You notice

  • An AC install booked but no dedicated circuit for it
  • An installer asking who is doing the electrical side
  • A unit specified to run off an existing socket circuit
  • A consumer unit that already looks full

It's costing you

  • An install that cannot be signed off or switched on
  • Two trades waiting on each other
  • You relaying wiring details between installer and electrician

And if you leave it

  • A unit running off a circuit never sized for it
  • No certificate when a buyer's surveyor asks
  • A consumer unit problem discovered mid-install

How the job is done

The same sequence on every job, so you know what happens and when.

  1. We assess the load and the cable route

Circuit sized for the unit's load, run from the consumer unit to the indoor and outdoor parts of the system, never shared with a socket circuit.

  2. We liaise with your AC engineer

Cable routing, isolator positions and circuit capacity agreed directly with the installer, so both jobs come together cleanly.

  3. We fit the circuit and isolators

A dedicated RCD-protected circuit plus everything the regulations require, including a weatherproof isolator next to an outdoor condenser unit.

  4. We test, certify and hand over

The certificate your AC installer needs to commission the system, issued as an NICEIC Approved Contractor once the circuit is tested.

More about air conditioning wiringWhat the job involves, the regulations that apply and related work

What air conditioning wiring involves

A domestic AC unit needs its own circuit run from the consumer unit, sized and protected correctly for the load. Here is what we fit:

  • A dedicated circuit - cable run from the consumer unit to both the indoor and outdoor parts of the system, sized for the unit’s load rather than sharing an existing socket circuit.
  • RCD protection - the circuit is protected to current wiring standards, not just connected.
  • Isolator switches - everything the regulations require, including a weatherproof isolator next to an outdoor condenser unit.
  • Testing and certification - once the circuit is in and tested, we issue the electrical certificate confirming the work meets current standards. Your AC installer needs it to commission the system, and a future buyer’s surveyor may ask to see it.

Do you install the air conditioning unit itself?

No. Fitting and commissioning the unit is a job for a qualified refrigeration and air conditioning engineer, a different trade with different training and F-Gas certification. What we supply is the electrical circuit that unit needs: designed correctly for its load, positioned where the AC engineer needs it and timed so nobody is standing around waiting on the other trade.

Some customers already have an AC engineer booked and just need a dependable electrician for the wiring. Others come to us first and want to know what to check with their AC installer before committing to a spec. Either route works.

We’re happy to liaise directly with your AC engineer on cable routing, isolator positions and circuit capacity so both jobs come together cleanly, rather than you relaying details back and forth between two tradespeople.

How long does the wiring take?

Most domestic air conditioning circuits are a single day’s electrical work once access and cable routes are agreed. Older properties or longer external cable runs can add time.

If your consumer unit is already at capacity or is an older fuse-based board, that sometimes needs sorting first. See our consumer unit upgrades service if that turns out to be the case.

Why book Martin Day Electricians

Coordinating with other trades on a single install is routine work for us, not a special case. Whether you need one circuit for a single split system or wiring for a multi-room setup, the process is the same: we study the photographs and details you send, give you a written estimate and get the electrical side ready in time for your AC engineer.

Ready to book, or need to check what your consumer unit can take before you commit to an AC install? Get in touch and we’ll give you a written estimate either way.

  • Consumer unit upgrades - if your fuse box or consumer unit needs upgrading to take the extra circuit an AC install needs.
  • Home office wiring - extra sockets, data points and comfort cooling for home offices and garden studios, often specified alongside air conditioning.
  • Extractor fan installation - the other half of most ventilation and climate-control work we do across Leeds homes.
  • Electrician costs in Leeds - how we arrive at estimates across every common job, including circuit work like this.
