Who replaces light switches in Leeds?Martin Day Electricians: often the same day

You get a safe, matched switch fitted in one visit, often the same day, with the wiring and back box behind it checked rather than just the faceplate swapped.

The short answer

Many light switch replacements are done in a single visit. We check the wiring and back box and fit a switch matched to the circuit, whether single, two-way or dimmer. We charge for the first hour to attend, which includes up to an hour to resolve the fault, and we explain what we find and what any further work will cost before you decide.

How do I know I need this?

A light switch that cracks, rattles or clicks without reliably working is a shock and fire risk, not just an eyesore. Left alone, a worn mechanism or split housing can fail dangerously, and dated switches across a home often signal ageing wiring behind them.

You notice

  • A switch that cracks, rattles or sticks
  • A light that only comes on after a few clicks
  • A dimmer that buzzes or flickers
  • Yellowed or mismatched faceplates around the house

It's costing you

  • Living with a light you cannot rely on
  • A shock risk every time you touch a split housing
  • Rooms let down by tired, dated fittings

And if you leave it

  • A worn mechanism failing dangerously
  • Ageing wiring behind the switches going unnoticed
  • A rewire conversation put off until it is urgent

How the job is done

The same sequence on every job, so you know what happens and when.

  1. We check the wiring and back box first

The old switch comes off and we inspect the condition of the wiring and back box behind it before fitting anything new.

  2. We match the switch to the circuit

Single, two-way for landings and stairwells or a dimmer where you want control over the light level, chosen for what the circuit actually needs.

  3. We fit it, and sort sockets in the same visit

Cracked, mismatched or dated faceplates replaced, and sockets done at the same time if they need attention.

  4. We flag anything bigger and estimate it separately

If dated switches point to ageing original wiring, we say so and estimate separately rather than swapping faceplates over a problem.

More about light switch replacementWhat the job involves, the regulations that apply and related work

What light switch replacement involves

We remove the old switch, check the wiring and the back box behind it are in good condition and fit a new switch matched to what the circuit actually needs. If the faceplate is cracked, mismatched or dated, we replace that too, and we can do sockets in the same visit if they need attention.

The right switch depends on the room and the circuit:

  • Single switch - the straightforward one-gang replacement most rooms need.
  • Two-way switch - for landings, stairwells and anywhere one light is controlled from two places.
  • Dimmer switch - for rooms where you want control over the light level.

Common candidates for replacement include yellowed rocker switches, dimmer modules that buzz or flicker and round pre-decimal-era switches left over from a previous renovation. All worth replacing rather than living with.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

For most homes this is straightforward work that we often finish the same day. We charge for the first hour to attend. That hour includes up to an hour to resolve the fault, and we explain what we find and what any further work will cost before you decide.

Is it just the switch, or a sign of something bigger?

If most of the switches and sockets in a property look dated at once, or the wiring behind them is the original installation from decades ago, that is usually a sign the whole property is due a look, not just the switch itself. Our signs your home needs rewiring guide sets out what to check.

A few related situations come up often:

  • Several dated switches at once - a full house rewire includes a complete switch and socket replacement as standard, so if you are weighing up one against the other, read that first.
  • A new home office or garden studio - new rooms usually need new circuits fitted to a proper standard rather than an extension lead trailing across the floor. Our home office wiring service covers that as one job.
  • Ongoing odd jobs - if you just want as-needed electrical work sorted without booking a bigger project, that is what our general electrical maintenance service is for.
