Who does full house rewires in Leeds?Martin Day Electricians: estimated in writing, certified at sign-off
You walk away with a home wired safely from the ground up, a written estimate before work started and an EICR certificate you can hand to a buyer, lender or insurer.

The short answer
A full rewire of a typical 3-bed Leeds home takes 1 to 2 weeks, working room by room so you can usually stay living there. We study photographs and details of the property first, give you a written estimate before work starts and finish with a full EICR certificate. NICEIC Approved Contractor.
- NICEIC Approved Contractor
- Part P registered
- JIB Approved
- On the Register of Electricians
- £5,000,000 public liability
How do I know I need this?
Round-pin sockets, an old fuse box running actual fuse wire and sockets that feel warm to the touch are signs of wiring that is overdue attention. Left alone, it is a real fire and shock risk, and it will fail an EICR the moment anyone tests it.
You notice
- Round-pin sockets or an original fuse box
- Plug sockets warm to the touch
- Lights that flicker or dim on their own
- Fuses or trips going more than occasionally
It's costing you
- A fire and shock risk behind the walls
- An EICR fail the moment anyone tests it
- Buyers knocking money off at the sight of old wiring
And if you leave it
- Repair after repair on wiring past patching
- A failed EICR stalling a sale or mortgage
- The same risk still in the walls, a year older
How the job is done
The same sequence on every job, so you know what happens and when.
We study the property first, then estimate
We study the photographs and information you send us: the condition of the wiring, where cables run and anything unusual to plan around. You get a written estimate before work starts.
We first-fix room by room
New cables run through walls, floors and ceilings before plastering, phased so you can usually stay living in the house while we work.
We second-fix and make good
Sockets, switches, light fittings and a new consumer unit connected and made good, with full switch and socket replacement as standard.
We test, certify and hand over the paperwork
Every rewire finishes with full testing and an EICR certificate you can hand to a buyer, mortgage lender or insurer without a second visit.
You send the details, we estimate, you decide.

More about full house rewiresWhat the job involves, the regulations that apply and related work
What a full rewire involves
A full rewire replaces the entire electrical installation in a property: every cable, socket, switch, light fitting and the consumer unit itself, brought up to current wiring regulations from the ground up. It is the right fix when the existing wiring is old, damaged, undersized for how the house is actually used now or has already failed an EICR, rather than patching round problem after problem. Not sure your wiring is that far gone? Our signs your home needs rewiring guide sets out the full list of warning signs to check before you call anyone out.
The job itself runs in a set order:
- Estimate first - we study the photographs and information you send us, not a guess from the doorstep. It tells us the condition of the existing wiring, where cables run and whether anything unusual (an old lighting circuit, a previous extension, an earlier DIY job) needs planning around.
- First fix - new cables run through walls, floors and ceilings before plastering.
- Second fix - sockets, switches, light fittings and the consumer unit connected and made good.
- Testing and certification - every rewire finishes with full testing and an Electrical Installation Condition Report, so you have a certificate proving the work meets current regulations, not just a verbal assurance.
What else is included in the job
Rewires rarely happen in isolation. A typical job also covers:
- A new consumer unit - an old fuse box is rarely worth keeping once everything else has been replaced.
- Full light switch and socket replacement - fitted as standard as part of second fix.
- Loft conversion or extension wiring - if that is what triggered the rewire, we handle it as one job through our attic and extension wiring service, rather than treating the new space as a separate project.
- An EICR at sign-off - a certificate you can hand to a buyer, a mortgage lender or your own insurer without a second visit.
How the pricing works
We study the photographs and information you send us, agree the scope and give you a written estimate before any work starts. An estimate is our best assessment of the job. It is not a fixed price. If we find something that couldn’t be seen at the start, such as a hidden fault, we will tell you what we have found and what it means for the price before carrying on.
For what moves the cost of a rewire before you ask for an estimate, our full house rewire cost guide and the wider electrician costs in Leeds guide explain how property size, age and access drive the price.
Why Martin Day Electricians
Full rewires are core work for us, not an occasional big job: we have been rewiring homes across Leeds for more than 30 years, and every one starts with a written estimate rather than a price plucked from the doorstep.
We carry out full rewires right across Leeds, including areas with a lot of older housing stock still running original wiring, such as Headingley, Armley, Beeston and Morley, as well as the rest of the city and the surrounding areas.
If your home is showing the warning signs, ask for an estimate or read what other Leeds homeowners say on our reviews page before you decide.

Questions about full house rewires
The questions we are asked most on the phone. Not covered here?
Ask Martin: 0113 347 3743How often should a house be rewired?
Most UK wiring lasts around 25 to 30 years before it needs replacing, and older pre-1960s installations or homes still running an original fuse box are usually due sooner. If you are not sure how old your wiring is, our signs your home needs rewiring guide covers the warning signs to check first.
How long does a house rewire take?
A full rewire on a typical 3-bed Leeds home usually takes 1 to 2 weeks, though the exact time depends on the size of the property, how easy the wiring is to access and whether any structural work is needed alongside it. We agree a realistic timeframe with you before work starts, as part of your written estimate.
Do I need to move out during a rewire?
Most people stay in the property throughout, though individual rooms will be without power while we work through them. We phase the job room by room and agree the sequence with you in advance, so you always know which parts of the house are live on a given day.
What are the signs my house needs rewiring?
Common warning signs include fuses or trips that go more than occasionally, warm plug sockets or switches, an old-style fuse box rather than a modern consumer unit, round-pin sockets and flickering or dimming lights. Any one of these on its own is worth a look.
Is it worth rewiring an old house before selling?
A full rewire is not usually a legal requirement to sell a home, but visibly old wiring or a failed EICR can put buyers off or give them room to negotiate the price down. Whether it is worth doing before you list the property is your call. An EICR can tell you exactly where the installation stands, so you are deciding with real information rather than a guess.
