Who installs extractor fans in Leeds?Martin Day Electricians: sized correctly, fitted in one visit

You walk away with a quiet, correctly sized fan that clears the steam, stops the mould coming back and comes with the electrical certificate to prove it meets the regulations.

The short answer

We install and replace extractor fans in bathrooms, kitchens, lofts and cellars across Leeds and Bradford. We size the fan to the room and the duct run, fit an isolation switch, vent it safely outside and issue an electrical certificate. You get a written estimate before work starts.

How do I know I need this?

A bathroom that stays steamed up long after a shower, mould creeping along the sealant or a kitchen window running with condensation, usually means the extraction is underpowered, blocked or was never fitted. Left alone, that damp keeps coming back no matter how often it's cleaned.

You notice

  • Steam that never clears after a shower
  • Foggy mirrors, every single time
  • Lingering odour in the kitchen or WC
  • A fan so loud nobody switches it on

It's costing you

  • Mould on ceilings, corners and sealant
  • Stained plaster and peeling paint
  • Damp quietly working into timber and window reveals

And if you leave it

  • Redecoration you shouldn't have needed
  • Rot in loft timbers and window frames
  • A landlord compliance problem at inspection

How the job is done

The same sequence on every job, so you know what happens and when.

  1. We assess the room and the duct route

Room volume, existing wiring and where the air actually has to go: loft, external wall or roof tile.

  2. We size the fan to the room and duct

A compact 100mm unit, a 150mm or an in-line loft unit where the duct run is long. Fans are sized to the room and duct, not by the visible cover.

  3. We agree the controls

Wired with the light, humidity sensor, pull cord or timer, plus the isolation switch every fan should have for maintenance.

  4. We fit, test, certify and tidy up

Tested and certified as an NICEIC Approved Contractor, notified where Building Regulations require it and the room left clean.

Do I need an extractor fan?

Building Regulations require mechanical extraction in most bathrooms and kitchens, particularly rooms without an opening window. So in most cases the question isn’t whether to fit a fan, but which fan, where and with what control.

What extractor fan installation involves

We size the fan to the room, route ducting to a proper external vent rather than just into the loft void and fit the type of fan the room actually needs:

  • Axial fans - simple wall or window-mounted units, right for most bathrooms and kitchens with an external wall close by.
  • Centrifugal fans - a stronger option where the duct run is longer.
  • In-line loft units - fitted remotely in the loft space for en suites and internal bathrooms with no external wall. One unit can serve more than one room at once.

The control matters as much as the fan, so we fit the one that suits how you’ll actually use the room:

  • Pull-cord or timer - straightforward manual control.
  • Humidistat - senses moisture and switches the fan on by itself.
  • Light-switch linked - comes on with the light and runs on afterwards via an overrun timer.

How bathroom wiring zones and Part P apply

Bathrooms are a special location under the wiring regulations: only fittings rated for the zone they sit in can go within splash range of a bath or shower, and we work to those zones as standard. Electrical work in a bathroom is also notifiable under Part P, so we issue the certificate confirming the installation meets current regulations once the job is done.

Can my existing fan be repaired?

Often the fan is still running but the room never clears, and the fan itself isn’t the fault. We diagnose the actual cause before recommending anything:

  • Collapsed or loose ducting behind the wall.
  • A blocked vent on the outside wall.
  • A weak fan that spins but can’t shift enough air for the room.

When the fan itself has failed, the usual signs are:

  • Worn bearings that get louder every month.
  • A humidistat that has stopped triggering.
  • A unit that has simply reached the end of its life.

If you want an existing fan looked at, we charge for the first hour to attend. That hour includes up to an hour to resolve the fault, and we explain what we find and what any further work will cost before you decide.

Where a straight swap is the answer, modern fans run quieter and use less power than older models. Many have a low-speed trickle setting that runs constantly and boosts automatically when the humidistat detects moisture.

We cover extractor fan work across Leeds and the surrounding areas, including Garforth, Kirkstall and Morley.

Martin installed a ventilation fan in our bathroom today. Did a great job finding the best place for it, uncovering an air brick, and wiring it up to our shower light. Very friendly service too. I'm very happy with the result!
