What is involved in a full house rewire?
Two main stages are involved in fully rewiring a house.
Stage one is normally known as the ‘first fix’. It involves installing the actual wiring and the back boxes to all the sockets and switches present in the property. This involves quite a lot of upheavel, disruption and dust. The carpets, flooring are lifted and pulled back to expose the floor boards which again need to be lifted to allow the cables to be installed. Anywhere you see a socket or switch, we need to channel into the walls to get the cable there.
Stage two is generally called the ‘second fix’ which involves joining up the electrics by fitting the switches, lights, fuse box, and sockets. Once the final connections are made, cables are inspected to check for damage, circuits are tested to prove the circuits are electrically safe and the design complies with the latest regulations the necessary certificates are issued.
Work is then registered with local building control. The walls can then be replastered ready for the decoration to be returned to their former glory or your new design to be applied.
Rewiring a house yourself
Historically rewiring a property yourself can lead to serious consequences. ‘Jack’ from down the club may know a bit about it, as he does all trades, disciplines and subjects. Unfortunately electrical safety is a specialist subject which takes years to master. Most evolutions of the electrical regulations BS7671 are to avoid dangerous practises developed by amateurs. Progressions in electrical safety and knowledge are not readily available to DIY or amateurs. Carrying out work which saves a few quid but compromises electrical safety is not a criminal offence. However, the results may be.
